Regulator: Hello friends, my name is Belly Lowliar and I'm the president of Corporate Accountability International, where we protect the world from corporate greed and abuse. I think we've already discussed the evils that the VW group had gone in the recent past. Most prominent among them was cheating the EPA (Environment Protection Agency).

Designer: Unfortunately you are right, Belly. The US agencies found that the emission levels in VW diesel engines were 40 times higher than the permissible levels!

Alexander Doblindt, Minister of Transport :
Minister: Surprisingly, it doesn't stop there, Alter. The company programmed its car computer to understand when it was being tested so that it could temporarily lower the emissions. That's a lot of emissions and pollution.

Belly Lowliar (President, CAI) :
Regulator: Absolutely! On an average, a VW car emits 2-4 times more pollutants than a Chevrolet, which is VW's biggest national competitor.

Matthias Cooler (CEO, Volkswagen) :
CEO: You're right, Belly. But VW paid the price for this, too. Our market cap fell from 82 billion Euros to 34 billion. In one month, we lost around 48 billion (more than 50% of market cap).

Belly Lowliar (President, CAI) :
Regulator: This is just the beginning Matthias, your Nazi company will soon come to its knees. We'll make sure of that. You're a company founded by Hitler himself. No good can come out of you.

Alter De-Silva (Chief Designer, Volkswagen) :
Designer: Belly, these are serious allegations. I've been associated with VW for quite some time. I know its history well. And one thing I can assure you of: it wasn't founded by Hitler.

Matthias Cooler (CEO, Volkswagen) :
CEO: Belly, I've been confronted with this question before. Yes, Hitler did make a few sketches of a car upon which the Beetle was based. But that doesn't make it his company. Hitler certainly wasn’t an automotive engineer. So this just isn’t true — Hitler did not design the Beetle.

Alexander Doblindt, Minister of Transport :
Minister: Absolutely, Matthias. Although Joseph Ganz had designed the early Beetle, the Nazi did not let this news out since he was a Jew.

Matthias Cooler (CEO, Volkswagen) :
CEO: And please don't taint the name of Volkswagen. Nearly every picture of Hitler in a car has him in a Mercedes-Benz. Even GM’s Opel division wasn’t shy about working for the Nazis. Why should VW unnecessarlity bear the brunt?

Alter De-Silva (Chief Designer, Volkswagen) :
Designer: I second Matthias. And Henry Ford had received a birthday card from Adolf Hitler himself. That makes him more Nazi than us.

Belly Lowliar (President, CAI) :
Regulator: So just because all such companies supported Hitler doesn't make it right. Matthias, your growth was fuelled solely by Hitler's patronage, and you have to take responsibility for it.

Alexander Doblindt, Minister of Transport :
Minister: Belly, let's not overreact here. Understand the origin and growth of this company named VW. Volkswagen in German means 'people's car' and it was founded with the same vision.

Matthias Cooler (CEO, Volkswagen) :
CEO: Belly, just keep an open mind and listen to us. The innovator behind VW was a man named Ferdinand Porsche. In 1937, he was chosen by Nazi government so that the German citizens could have a cheap car.

Alexander Doblindt, Minister of Transport :
Minister: Oh, that man! Ferdinand was a genius. In his teens, he had already designed the world's first front-wheel-drive car. And mind well, it ran on electricity - something that has popped up again only once Tesla made it popular.

Alter De-Silva (Chief Designer, Volkswagen) :
Designer: True Alexander, he was indeed a brilliaint designer. Not only did he win awards, but the Austrian heads of state were using cars designed by him. He even designed the airplane engines which the Austrian forces used in World War I.

Belly Lowliar (President, CAI) :
Regulator: Yeah, I've heard how he actually wanted to replicate in Europe what Ford did in the US with Model T. Helping people through technology isn't a bad thing, but his means weren't good.

Matthias Cooler (CEO, Volkswagen) :
CEO: Belly, the means weren't bad, either. Porsche's engineering dominated the 1934 Grand Prix season and caught Hitler's attention.

Belly Lowliar (President, CAI) :
Regulator: Yes, and the next thing we know is that Hitler is laying the cornerstone of the largest automobile factory in the world for Volkswagen. An entire town was built just to support this factory.

Alter De-Silva (Chief Designer, Volkswagen) :
Designer: Calm down Belly. At that point in time, Hitler was seen as the promise who could pull Germany out of economic trouble. So 300,000 Beetles were ordered into production. And when the war broke out, Ferdinand did what he was ordered to do: not give any cars to the customers, but to supply them to the military.

Belly Lowliar (President, CAI) :
Regulator: Wow! So in the same factory, VW started building armored cars and V1 flying bombs, right Alter?
