    Sim Book (CEO, Apple) :
Apple: Hello all, We have previously discussed how Nokia rose in the phone industry and how it was at its height in 2005.

  • User Avatar

    Saudi Niinistö (President, Finland) :
President: Yes, the 1990s and early 2000s were the golden period for Nokia. But things did change once iPhone and Android entered the market.

  • User Avatar

Dr. Oh-No Lost (CEO, Samsung) :
Samsung: Right Saudi, Nokia couldn't keep up with the new consumer demand and wanted to stick to its old phone operating systems. Samsung hence overtook Nokia as the world's largest manufacturer of phones.

  • User Avatar

    Kristian Pushola (CFO, Nokia) :
CFO: Well Sim, the reason for the fall was internal competition amongst teams due to cost cutting, where everyone was fighting to keep their jobs.

  • User Avatar

Dr. Oh-No Lost (CEO, Samsung) :
Samsung: But more importantly, your former CEO Stephen Elop (an ex-Microsoft employee) literally sold out Nokia to Microsoft. And bit by bit, Microsoft has ensured that Nokia is a name that people don't remember.

  • User Avatar

    Saudi Niinistö (President, Finland) :
President: True, Dr. Lost. When Microsoft acquired Nokia's smartphone division, there was a clause that for 30-months Nokia cannot sell any phones under the brand name 'Nokia'. This 30-month period has now ended, and Nokia is coming up with something new.

  • User Avatar

    Sim Book (CEO, Apple) :
Apple: I think our last discussion had ended when someone said that although the phones would be from Nokia, they technically wouldn't be Nokia phones.

  • User Avatar

Dr. Oh-No Lost (CEO, Samsung) :
Samsung: So what's going to happen? Is the manufacturing outsourced? All leading companies do that. But it doesn't mean that the phone isn't theirs. Enlighten us, Kristian.

  • User Avatar

    Kristian Pushola (CFO, Nokia) :
CFO: Yes Dr. Lost, there are a few rumors in the market that Nokia is coming back with a new range of phones in 2017. There were a lot of mistakes that we made last time. In spite of excellent hardware and camera, we lost out because of not switching to android (not providing sufficient applications).

  • User Avatar

    Sim Book (CEO, Apple) :
Apple: So, you are not going to make this mistake again. Fair enough. Shall we assume that the new Nokia phone shall be an Android device? Or would it run on your own software like Symbian - the one which you had jointly developed with Motorola?

  • User Avatar

    Saudi Niinistö (President, Finland) :
President: There are rumors of 2 phone launches - a medium budget phone and a flagship device, which shall go head to head with Samsung Galaxy 8 and even the latest iPhones.

  • User Avatar

    Kristian Pushola (CFO, Nokia) :
CFO: You're right Saudi, the flagship phone has 6GB RAM and the best processor. In fact, the CPU that we're using hasn't even been released to the market yet.

  • User Avatar

Dr. Oh-No Lost (CEO, Samsung) :
Samsung: Since there is no confirmed news of this, I'm taking this information with a pinch of salt. Going against Galaxy 8? That isn't easy, Kristian.

  • User Avatar

    Sim Book (CEO, Apple) :
Apple: "And going up against iPhone - impossible! Especially because the phone is not going to be Nokia's, correct?"

  • User Avatar

    Saudi Niinistö (President, Finland) :
President: Yes, it can't be Nokia's. It no longer has the manufacturing facilities to produce mobile phones, let alone on such a large scale. They had a few factories in Finland. Many were sold, and others shut down, moving production to foreign soil.

  • User Avatar

Dr. Oh-No Lost (CEO, Samsung) :
Samsung: Then what's the plan? How will they hit the market?

  • User Avatar

    Kristian Pushola (CFO, Nokia) :
CFO: Let me clear all your doubts, Mr. CEO. We have two partners - a brand new Finnish company named HMD Global and the Taiwanese phone manufacturer Foxconn.

  • User Avatar

    Sim Book (CEO, Apple) :
Apple: So, this is a joint venture of sorts?

  • User Avatar

    Kristian Pushola (CFO, Nokia) :
CFO: Well Sim, you can say that. HMD Global shall develop the market and sell the phones while Foxconn shall focus on the R&D and manufacturing.

  • User Avatar

    Saudi Niinistö (President, Finland) :
President: I don't understand one thing - there are plenty of experienced companies of the world that y'all could have tied up with, tens even in Finland itself. Why choose a new company like HMD?

  • User Avatar

    Kristian Pushola (CFO, Nokia) :
    CFO: Because HMD is Nokia.

  • User Avatar

Dr. Oh-No Lost (CEO, Samsung) :
Samsung: I'm familiar with Nokia's investments. They haven't invested, nor acquired any company called HMD. Then how can HMD be Nokia? Am bit confused, Kristian.

  • User Avatar

    Kristian Pushola (CFO, Nokia) :
CFO: Fair enough Dr. Lost, Nokia has neither invested in HMD nor has HMD invested in Nokia. The two companies have only come together to sell cell phones.

  • User Avatar

    Sim Book (CEO, Apple) :
Apple: I think Kristian, you can keep the mystery aside and tell us what it is, without surprises.

  • User Avatar

    Kristian Pushola (CFO, Nokia) :
CFO: Alright, Sim. HMD has been founded by Nokia ex-employees. They had all left during the turbulence, and are now back to save Nokia.

  • User Avatar

    Saudi Niinistö (President, Finland) :
President: Do you think you're ready enough to go to the market? Its been quite long. A new generation has arisen, which doesn't have many good memories of Nokia.

  • User Avatar

    Kristian Pushola (CFO, Nokia) :
CFO: Right, Saudi. Nokia is going on an all-out marketing campaign blitz. This includes contracting the largest independent advertising firm in the UK: 'Mother'.

  • User Avatar

Dr. Oh-No Lost (CEO, Samsung) :
Samsung: Mother is very good. They have worked with many many big names across industries: Google, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, Ikea, etc.

  • User Avatar

    Sim Book (CEO, Apple) :
Apple: Companies often lose out because they just don't get the marketing and advertising right. Advertising campaigns must be memorable, and resonate with potential customers.

  • User Avatar

    Saudi Niinistö (President, Finland) :
President: So, in effect: it is a bunch of Nokia ex-employees who've got together, formed HMD global and shall pull out Nokia from the grave; make it rise again.

  • User Avatar

    Sim Book (CEO, Apple) :
Apple: We'll of course, see what happens but I wish them all the best.

  • User Avatar

Dr. Oh-No Lost (CEO, Samsung) :
Samsung: Samsung has had a lot of success after moving to Android (although it is a pain too and we're planning to change the OS for all our phones). Let's hope that Nokia courts success, too. All the very best.

  • User Avatar

    Kristian Pushola (CFO, Nokia) :
CFO: Thank you Sim and Dr. Lost. The entire world is waiting for the mega launch of our flagship phone.
