Wife: Hello everyone, before we move on to the discussion I'll introduce myself. I'm Mirinda Gates, wife of Bill Gates and mother of his 3 beautiful children. Over the course of a few years, we shall be donating more than $75 billion to humanitarian causes.

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: Hello, myself Deep Kanya Kumar, the Chief Technology Officer at Google India. Speaking of my background, I am a Ph.D. laurate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: As the COO at Apple, I took office after Tim was promoted to CEO. Earlier, I have overseen Apple’s entire supply chain, service and support, and the social responsibility initiatives. Chef Williams is my name.

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: Hi friends, PayMe Good here. I report to Satya Nadella as the CFO of Microsoft. Keeping up with the economic and financial growth of the company is my responsibility. I'm excited to discuss about my company today, especialy since we're making a comeback after a few sad years.

  • User Avatar

Mirinda Gates (Spouse, Bill Gates) :
Wife: We have 3 top executives from the biggest tech giants in the world, the crème-de la-crème. It's going to be interesting discussing Microsoft's growth story.

  • User Avatar

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: Definately! The theme here is pretty consistent: Google, Microsoft, and Apple all had young founders who saw ahead of their times and innovated to create world-changing products.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: Not just that: their naming stories are also different. When Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded the company in 1975, the two childhood friends established the company Micro-Soft, short for Microcomputers Software.

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: It is hilarious that the world called PCs microcomputers then. I wonder what tablets must have been called by them. Especially since most people were against PCs. Look at Ken Oshen, for example. Despite being the Founder of Digital Equipment coporation, he remarked, 'There's no reason for any individual to have a computer at their home.'

  • User Avatar

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: That's sad. But we often fail to see the future. But Apple and Microsoft did see it. Unlike Apple which started with hardware, Microdoft targeted software in their early phase.

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: Yes, we entered the industry of operating systems with our own version of Unix called Xenix.

  • User Avatar

Mirinda Gates (Spouse, Bill Gates) :
Wife: But Bill says it didn't work out that well. Microsoft's first major breakthrough came with the release of MS-DOS in 1981.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: Oh, speaking of DOS in the 80's; It must have very difficult to compete with IBM, they were the leaders in DOS then.

  • User Avatar

Mirinda Gates (Spouse, Bill Gates) :
Wife: You're right. It wasn't easy. But after years of battling against IBM's PC-DOS, Microsoft eventually came out as the leading provider.

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: DOS wasn't that great. At that point, most operating systems just had a black screen where you could type commands and get output. We can't even imagine how primitive that technology was.

  • User Avatar

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: But Microsoft did change that in 1985. They released a graphical version of DOS and wanted to name it "Interface Manager." But the marketing head convinced Bill to change it to something else. Any guesses?

  • User Avatar

Mirinda Gates (Spouse, Bill Gates) :
Wife: 'Windows.' That changed our lives, forever. After that, there was no looking back.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: That isn't entirely true. In the early days of Windows, it wasn't very great. Apple was in the lead because users liked the Mac OS more.

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: Chef, you're right. But with frequent improvements and the successful launch of MS Office, consumers started tilting more towards Microsoft.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: Let us not forget that this phase was quite sad for Apple because Steve was no longer there with us. Had he been the CEO, things may have been different then. And internet-based companies hadn't even been established yet.

  • User Avatar

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: Perhaps yes, while all this was happening, Google wasn't even born! While we are talking about successes, let's give credit to Microsoft for their best product ever - Windows 95. Although it tried to bring in a graphical interface through 'Bob', it only made the system slow and clunky. Although Bob has now been deleted from history, it's remenant still troubles us: Comic Sans.

  • User Avatar

Mirinda Gates (Spouse, Bill Gates) :
Wife: I don't undertand why people hate Comic Sans so much! But the 95 gave the global acceptability and love to Microsoft, which continues even today. I remember Bill obsessing about music that needed to be played on system startup.

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: Brian Eno was hired to give the futuristic sound effect which had to be precisely 3.25 seconds long. He created 84 different pieces before finalizing the best one.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: But the IRONY is that the theme music for Windows was created by Brian on a Mac. Moreover, Brian has always said that he doesn't even like computers.

  • User Avatar

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: Hahahaha, that must have hurt the Microsoft Senior management!

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: The important point here is that we got popular. Did you know that the success from 95 enabled us to launch X-Box?

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
    Apple: Microsoft owns X-Box?

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: Yes, in fact, the 4-tile signs on our logo stand for Windows (blue), Office (red), Xbox (green), and Bing (yellow).

  • User Avatar

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: PayMe, don't deflect from the question. Microsoft has had a few embarrassments, too. And I'm not talking about the failure of the Windows phones. It's about the Windows XP launch.

  • User Avatar

Mirinda Gates (Spouse, Bill Gates) :
Wife: That was a disaster arising from factors beyond our control. To give you a brief idea, we wanted a catchy slogan to launch Windows XP. After deciding on "Prepare to Fly" and printing marketing material for it, 9/11 happened.

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: Because of this, Microsoft had to spend over $200 million, just to change to slogan to 'Yes You Can' instead.

  • User Avatar

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: It wasn't all bad. Internet Explorer was the default browser and y'all had 95% of market share in browsers. In spite of a free market, you had a goddamn monopoly.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: Yeah, but Firefox and Opera did hurt you a lot. I still can't understand as to why did you make that unethical move. Why did you block msn.com for Opera? Just so that users switch to Internet Explorer?

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
    CFO: No comments.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: Y'all have had problems with naming your products too! How can you have an update titled "Critical Update Notification Tool"? The acronym is derogatory.

  • User Avatar

Mirinda Gates (Spouse, Bill Gates) :
Wife: Microsoft never launched any software with that name. It was changed to "Critical Update Notification Utility" before the launch.

  • User Avatar

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: You're deflecting again. For your search engine, you decided to use 'Bang'. It doesn't work as well when used as a verb. As in 'Let me just bang that real quick.'

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: Oh, that's how 'Bang' changed to 'Bing'!

  • User Avatar

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: Yes, and being from Apple, you'd know how they also seem to take trademark infringements a bit too seriously.

  • User Avatar

Mirinda Gates (Spouse, Bill Gates) :
Wife: Please understand: large corporations like Apple and Google are both known to take copyright and trademark infringements seriously.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: But we don’t go after kids! A teenager named Mike Rowe registered the domain MikeRoweSoft.com. And you decided to take legal action against Mike Rowe solely based on this! The website itself had nothing to do with Microsoft. Why did you have to steal that child's domain from him?

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: An agreement was reached where he willingly handed over the domain in exchange for many Microsoft products, including an Xbox.

  • User Avatar

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: Wow, I wish your patent lawsuits against Apple are also settled with an Xbox. You were both stealing ideas from each other.

  • User Avatar

Mirinda Gates (Spouse, Bill Gates) :
Wife: Although they are competitors, each respected other and their respective contributions to the field of technology.

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: In fact, when Apple was almost courting bankruptcy in 1997, Steve Jobs wanted to improve the relations between the two companies and came to him for help. At that point, Bill invested $150 million, which became Apple's lifeline.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: It takes two to tango. I feel that both companies have done things that they should not have. One, more than the other.

  • User Avatar

Mirinda Gates (Spouse, Bill Gates) :
Wife: Exactly! Bill had replied to this accusation: 'Well, Steve, I think there's more than one way of looking at it. I think it's more like we both had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it.'

  • User Avatar

Deep Kanya Kumar (CTO, Google India) :
Google: Well, we could go on and on. The fight may never stop. But the truth is that Apple is a bigger brand than Microsoft.

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: Sure thing, but while Apple is losing its charm with stagnation and no innovation, Microsoft has a brighter future.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: Why not let the market decide that, PayMe?

  • User Avatar

    PayMe Good (CFO, Microsoft) :
CFO: Sure, let's talk about may of our futuristic projects; but not today, some other time. But let's not forget that 2004 itself, Microsoft introduced SpotWatch, the first smartwatch. It used FM radio waves to get interesting content like sports, news, weather and stock prices to your wearable device.

  • User Avatar

    Chef Williams (COO, Apple) :
Apple: So what, PayMe? AT&T is working on Virtual Reality since 1993. But where are they today? We need to look at sutainability, too.

  • User Avatar

Mirinda Gates (Spouse, Bill Gates) :
Wife: Let's not get into it. It was good interacting with all of you. Good bye.
